Bronze Age Barrows & the Sanctuary

This site known as Soerfon Barrows is not far from Avebury. I have been to Avebury many times and it has almost become my second home. The world famous stone circle is of course hugely impressive, but Avebury is part of a designated World Heritage Site, and there is a landscape to explore which contains many prehistoric monuments. Most of which are connected in some way.

What I am trying to do now is to explore some of the less well known and yet equally important sites in the area.

The barrows are close to the Sanctuary, which is a timber circle. It is very similar to Woodhenge. As it was made of wood nothing remains however there are marker posts. Perhaps some day someone will pay to have this rebuilt.

  1. I love The Sanctuary - it's usually free from new agers. It's quite high up, and oddly peaceful, despite the main road being within incence burner throwing distance.
